Have you ever wondered why Creative Businesses Are Always Working One Season Ahead?

If you’ve ever wondered why Halloween decorations start appearing in stores while you’re still enjoying summer, you’re not alone. As a shopper, it can feel a little early. But as a designer, I’ve learned that the creative calendar works a little differently.

I’ve found that my creativity works best when I stay focused on one type of product. If I’m working on vintage tags, I’ll create an entire series before moving on to something else. One week I might be designing Halloween tags, fall tags, Christmas tags, and Valentine’s Day tags. The next, I might switch to postcards or bookmarks and do the same thing all over again. It keeps my ideas flowing and helps me create collections that go together naturally.

More Than Just Creating a Design

Every collection begins with a little inspiration. Sometimes it’s a vintage postcard, an old book, or a faded piece of ephemera that catches my eye. Other times, it’s simply getting into the mood of the next season. While it’s still summer outside.

The shift in mindset helps the ideas come naturally. Once the inspiration starts flowing, I spend time designing, adjusting colors and layouts, and refining each piece until it feels just right. And even then, the work is only beginning.

Each collection takes much more time than most people realize.

Why Everything Happens Early

Another reason creative businesses work ahead is simple—our customers do, too. Many crafters like to start their holiday projects weeks or even months before the season arrives. They’re making handmade gifts, decorating journals, planning classrooms, or preparing for craft fairs long before the holiday itself.

By having new collections available early, there’s plenty of time for inspiration to turn into finished projects.

Looking Ahead While Enjoying Today

One of the challenges of creative work is learning to enjoy the current season while designing for the next one. It’s not unusual for me to be surrounded by pumpkins in July, snowflakes in September, and spring flowers while Christmas music is still playing.

I’m still getting used to this way of working, even after many years in retail. Instead of feeling rushed, I can take my time, build collections thoughtfully, and enjoy watching each new idea come to life.

A New Chapter for My Paper Goods

Lately, I’ve also been working on something that’s especially exciting.

Many of my vintage-inspired designs are making the journey from digital artwork to professionally printed paper goods. Seeing designs that once lived only on my computer become something I can hold in my hands has been incredibly rewarding.

Over the coming months, you’ll begin seeing more vintage labels, tags, postcards, and other paper goods available in both digital and printed formats.

I’m looking forward to sharing this next chapter with you.
