How I Turn One Idea Into an Entire Seasonal Collection – One of my favorite parts of creating digital products is seeing how one simple idea can grow into an entire collection.
I don’t always sit down with a complete collection planned out from the beginning. More often, I start with one type of product I feel inspired to create—maybe printable tags, clipart, digital stickers, or an SVG design.
Then one idea leads to another.
It Usually Starts with a Theme
Sometimes the inspiration is a season or holiday. Other times, it might be a particular image, color palette, or style that catches my attention.
Fall and Halloween are perfect examples. There are so many directions you can go—pumpkins, scarecrows, ghosts, black cats, vintage Halloween characters, autumn florals, crows, candy, and plenty more.
Once I find a theme I’m enjoying, I usually don’t want to stop after creating just one design.
Then I Create in Batches
I’ve learned that I enjoy creating several versions of the same type of product while I’m in that creative mindset.
If I’m working on printable tags, for example, I might create several completely different tag sets before moving on to something else.
The same thing happens with clipart. One Halloween clipart collection can inspire another with a different group of characters or a completely different look.
Working this way keeps me focused on the type of product I’m enjoying at the moment while still giving me plenty of room to experiment with new ideas.
One Design Can Lead to Something Completely Different
This is where things really start to get fun.
After I’ve created a design, I often start thinking about what else I could make with it.
A group of Halloween characters created for a clipart collection might also work beautifully as digital stickers. Individual illustrations could inspire printable tags, journal pieces, cards, or other seasonal projects.
The original artwork becomes a starting point rather than the finished idea.
I Like My Products to Work Together
Creating collections also gives me the opportunity to make products that coordinate with one another.
A crafter might use clipart to create a card, matching printable elements in a junk journal, and digital stickers in a planner—all while keeping the same general theme or style.
I love the idea that someone can find a design they like and use it in several different ways.
Sometimes the Collection Grows Later
Not every idea gets finished at once.
I may create a set of tags and move on, only to come across those designs later and realize they would make great stickers or inspire a new clipart collection.
That’s one of the advantages of creating digital artwork. An idea doesn’t necessarily have an expiration date.
I can come back to it, look at it differently, and turn it into something new.
From One Idea to a Growing Creative Library
Over time, all of those individual ideas start building on each other.
One pumpkin can turn into a fall clipart collection. That collection can inspire stickers. The stickers might spark an idea for printable tags. And before I know it, that one little idea has become a group of coordinating creative resources.
That’s probably my favorite part of the process.
I never really know where an idea is going to lead when I start creating—and that’s what keeps it interesting.
